What foreign citizens are allowed to serve in the US military?

I have heard that foreign citizens are allowed to serve in the US military. Indeed during the Vietnam era, non-US citizens resident in the USA and holding green cards were even conscripted. What is the legal basis for this?

Does a foreign volunteer today have to be a green card holder or can they be on a student, work or even visitor visa? Can someone just fly into the US and report at a recruitment center like any foreign national can do with the French Foreign Legion?

How long does it take to get US citizenship through serving in the American military? What foreign citizens are allowed to serve in the US military? You need a green card or be a US citizen to join the military.Visas will not qualify you for enlistment.

Citizenship for a green card holder in the military is fast tracked, usually from what I've seen someone will obtain citizenship by the end of their initial contract. But you would need to speak to a recruiter about that to get specifics.

As for a foreign legion the US doesn't have anything of the like and only takes green card holders or US citizens. What foreign citizens are allowed to serve in the US military?
I really dont think so somehow !What foreign citizens are allowed to serve in the US military?Anyone that's not good enough to get in their own countries army !

However, it may be illegal to do it in some countries. I doubt you can fly in as you need a visa in most cases to enter the US. However, I think a recruiter can arrange for you to enlist at a consulate. What foreign citizens are allowed to serve in the US military?
Legal Permanent Residency ONLY. No visas of any type.

No longer can citizens of other nations( such as the PI) join the US military. we no longer have that agreement with any nation.

Citizenship can be expedited. the residency requirement is waived, and a Permanent Resident may apply for citizenship a year after enlisting.
You need a Green Card to enlist.

Up until 1992 the navy took a limited number of recruits from the Phlippines each year. That program is finished. What foreign citizens are allowed to serve in the US military?
