There are many disadvantages to war, with the loss of life always the preeminent concern of a good head of state or general. There is also a very good chance of losing a war, in which case many number of bad scenarios may arise. Your nation's view of you as a ruler could be effected either way as a result of going to war, as can the perception of other nations, usually adversely, if you were the antagonist. Also importantly, war is by nature a mutual wearing down of the military machines of all parties involved, so by waging war, your military will weaken to some extent, possible causing you to be overextended and open for invasion by another force you would not have had to worry about had the original war not have taken place.



As far as the American Revolutionary war goes, it was not a question of one nation being stronger and therefore having the advantage, it was about political objectives which decide how far the leaders and combatants are willing to go in order to win.



With the colonistsit was about freedom, independence, and not wishing to continue under the mother country, which treated them as if they weren't citizens at all. The British were fighting for money and tobacco. Colonies were established around the world in order to produce specific goods to be collected, taxed, and distributed by the empire, each location of colony clusters having a central good which they were established to produce. For the American colonies it was tobacco, which was highly valued, but not so much as the goods from some other colonies, i.e. tea from India, diamonds from South Africa, etc.



In essence, the colonists were willing to lose everything in attempting to achieve their political objective, whereas the war for the British had a very limited and measureable reason behind it. Therefore the colonists would have to be crushed completely to allow British victory and an end to conflict, but to lose all that was required was the possibility of the war costing the empire more than retaining the colonies was worth. This was achieved by Gen. Washington despite having far more losses of battles against the British. The empire could have easily sent more armies to the colonies to crush them, but not cheaply, and it could have also caused them to become weak in another, more important area of the world and risk losing far more than tobacco production.What are the advantages and disadvantages of military conflict?
