How do you become a general or military commander?

What do you tell to a young teen who wants to become a military commander?

(One that gives out specfic orders)How do you become a general or military commander?A very small percentage of officers become Generals. When you reach the high ranks of the military it becomes very political. Most officers that have become Generals have been proven leaders and commanders in wars, commanded very large units succesfully or have worked in high profile positions like in the Pentagon or other areas of Washington, DC where military officers work closely with political figures.

In my honest opinion, I think you have to be good leader from the beginning of your career and then hope that: (a) you get stationed in a high profile area where you are mentored throughout your career or (b) be a good leader and have someone mentor you and introduce you to the right people. b should lead up to a and vice versa. A lot also has to do with the education you receive while you are in the military (i.e War College, leadership programs, etc.)How do you become a general or military commander?
Everyone had good comments but dont forget Generals are ALL Promoted and appointed by Congress. How do you become a general or military commander?you have to go to a military school, or graduate from college with a 4 yr degree and then apply to OCS. After that it depends on how fast you can rise through the ranks.
Go to a military academy or participate in ROTC at your college. But you do need to complete college, at least. When you're out of college, talk to a recruiter and if your testing qualifies you, you'll go to Officer Cadet School and qualify to be a second lieutenant (or whatever the lowest-rank commissioned officer is in your country).

From there, the sky's the limit.

Good luck to you.How do you become a general or military commander?I would first like to say; congradulations, you are embarking on a noble journey. It is a lot of work, but what you desire is a very honorable desire.

I would first talk to your parents. Let them know that you are potentially desiring a career in the military. They will be able to help you better than anyone.

Your first task should be to look into JROTC programs. Even if your school doesn't offer JROTC, you can still attend another schools JROTC. I knew plenty of people in my school who were JROTC at another school. This is a great way to get your foot in the door, and figure out if you like it or not.

Once you get into high school, you have your options:

1: Apply at one of the Service Academies. They are:

U.S Military Academy (West Point) - Army

U.S Naval Academy (Annapolis) - Navy and Marine Corps

U.S Air Force Academy (Colorado) - Air Force

The problem with them, of course, is the commitment. You have to know which branch you want to serve in, and once you get in (Which takes respectably high marks in high school) you are obligated to serve with that branch for a set number of years.

2: Go to a regular college and take ROTC, or one of the Military Colleges such as The Citadel or the Virginia Military Institute.

This offers you some more flexibility, as you can pick and choose your branch based on your tastes, and you get more of the college life. The downfall is that you are not as likely to rise up the ranks as if you went to an Academy.

From here, you will get your commission as a Second Lieutenant. This is the bottom rung of the officer branch, you will likely command a platoon. From here, you work your way up the ranks; getting to General usually comes in your 50's or 60's, depending on your skill and advancement.

Good luck! I hope that helped!

EDIT: I noticed that you just asked what to study in college. History would be a good discipline. So would Criminal Justice. However, Engineering or Law would probably be your best bet, though be prepared, those are tough degrees to get!How do you become a general or military commander?
Those positions are usually nominated by big wigs in the congress and senate, and they also hold hearings to confirm them.
go through the examinationHow do you become a general or military commander?
join the army as a private, then creep after evryone senior to u, it may take years, but if u dont get abused in the meantime u may get there
The Irony of this question is that the answer is exactly what you are trying to avoid after signing up for ocs...It's all politics from there. All the butt-kissing you'll have to do to keep moving up in rank will leave a bad taste in your mouth....that's why I enlisted instead. And I work for a living.
You have to go graduate West point (you could go to any uni and take ROTC, but west point grads have a much better chance), get commissioned, then not screw up and be a really good officer for a few decades, working your way up from a lieutenant
If you want to become a military commander the first thing to learn is nobody give a f**k what your personal opinion is. You will conform to the desires of your civilian bosses or your career is DRT(dead right there). Military officers are subject to the most ruthless selection process on Earth. The most important things are 1) conform confirm confirm repeat confirm. 2) do exactly as you are told.Show some inititive, but not too much. Always let the civilians think they run things, in spite of the fact that they are there because they are either too lazy or incompotent to cut it outside the government.3) Learn to take credit for sucess and blame your failures on some one else. 4) let someone else-- the NCOs do the real work. The more distant your are from the work, the more likely you will recieve credit for sucess.5) Learn to play golf, but never never outplay a civilian.
And you want to be a military commander?? In what country my friend?
1 Join The Military

2 Become An Officer(Preferably at your countries top military academy)

3 Pile Up Combat Experience as a Junior Officer

4 Constantly Study Logistics Tactics And Strategy

5 Study the Careers Of.....

Field Marshal Erwin Rommel

General Robert E Lee

Lieutenant General Thomas Stonewall Jackson

General George S. Patton

General Dwight D. Eisenhower

Alexander The Great

King Leonidas Of Sparta

Napoleon

6 Learn To Master Politics In the Military

Do these six things and any officer can advance to the Rank of 4 Star General
Step one: join a branch of the military. If you're interested in a fast track to the top, select a country whose armed forces are currently on the losing side of a military conflict, for there will be a steady stream of job openings (i.e., command positions of increased rank) into which you can be promoted. If you are persistent and are good at avoiding situations in which you will die, you'll be a general in no time flat.
Kiss ***.
There's no easy and quick way to get to the top. In order to develop command experience you first have to start at the bottom and be the one taking orders. If you then decide to go career, by staying with the army and developing good skills and a good reputation you'll advance to be the one in charge.
tell him/her that before a true leader gives orders, he/she must understand about what it means to carry them out... Insist on clear rules and obedience to them. Make them record the events like a log. Question the child on the events of the day and get them to think of solutions to problems encountered: orders surely, should be a way to solve something...

And despite everything hope the practice shows said boy/girl the flip side of being in the military and kid grows up and does something else, I would.
Go to an Academy. Do your time, contribute lots of money to the Political Party of your choice and remember
