Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President?

What if we are already at war and our military decides the use of nuclear weapons is needed? Does the military need an approval from Congress in which weaponry is used?

Can the President override Congress on military issues?Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President?Congress does not have to approve all military actions, and usually the President doesn't even ask for approval. Only Congress can declare war, but the last time they did that was WWII. Clearly we can go to war without a declaration (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq).

Congress has passed the War Powers Act that gives it the right to order the President to cease hostilities and bring troops home, but the constitutionality of that Act is in doubt. So far, Congress has never used it, so it hasn't been tested.Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President?
The military looks only to the president for the approval to use nuclear weapons.

The president holds special powers over the military and the use of force. The congress couldn't be relied upon to make quick decisions because of it's very nature. However, only congress can declare a "war" and we are not technically in a war. At the very most, this would be considered a police action.Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President? No. A president can use the military for almost any activities the president deems as necessary.

Congress has the right to declare war and Presidents have the right to the use the military for nearly any purpose. It is in the Constitution.

To Bill: Excellent answer. Especially on the 1973 War Powers Act.Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President?
Back in Kennedy's time - perhaps even Eisenhower's time - the reality of nuclear weapons put war-making power into the President's hands... Since that time we've never had a "War" - we've fought 100 "military actions" all because presidents decided they were a swell idea. Congress still has to vote the money, but it's always after the "War" is started.

So... makes it real important who you vote for as president. You can easily get a nasty, sadistic little loser like Bush - and then we have to fight his "Wars" which aren't really "Wars".... We get to pay for his war crimes.Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President? As you already know, The President can send our troops under the guise of a Police action, without threat to our nation. The Military Leaders can not take any action without the Presidents approval, hence "Commander in Chief" so President Obama can change the direction of military actions that are approved by Congress.

(hmmm, maybe you dont know?)Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President?
Depends on the price.

As long as military action does not need to exceed the discretionary budget
