  • Can someone in the military marry without parental consent if he鈥檚 17?

My bf and I plan to get married right after he receives his military ID. At that time he鈥檒l be 17. We live in Virginia and plan to get married by justice of the peace. The question is, although he is a minor, will the military ID allow him to marry me without parental consent?

I will be over the age of 18, so most of the confusion is over whether or not his age will be the issue. Can someone in the military marry without parental consent if he鈥檚 17?I think the only "adult" things a military ID will allow a 17-year-old to do are:

    1) Join the military

    2) be deployed to a foreign land

    3) while living in that foreign land it may be locally legal to obtain cigarettes %26amp; alcoholCan someone in the military marry without parental consent if he鈥檚 17?What will waiting a year hurt if you are going to be together forever? WAIT. In my state, while the military makes many different exceptions for folks serving their country, the marriage laws are the same....Can someone in the military marry without parental consent if he鈥檚 17?It looks to me like Virginia requires that you be 18 or have parental consent. See link. Can someone in the military marry without parental consent if he鈥檚 17?
With divorce so high at your age why do this Mandy? Don't get married now. Your only asking for problems in your life if you do.

How are military ecorts for soldiers Killed in Action selected?

Refering to the movie "Taking Chance" starring Kevin Bacon, what is the point of contact for those interested in volunteering for such duty as serving as a military escort to soldiers Killed In Action? How are military ecorts for soldiers Killed in Action selected? It is a form you fill out, and state your pretty much where you wanna be buried, who you want to carry the casket, and other funeral things. It's not called ISO Prep, because the ISO Prep is used for when you're captured or missing. What is the policy on food in the military?

Like, who pays for your eats? Do they feed your whole family while you in the military? Are there big cafeterias filled with free food for the whole base to go and eat at? What if you want a snack on the road - does your sargent pay for it? What if it is not healthy and your sargent thinks it might slow you down? Do they only pay for fruit and granola bars? What is the policy on food in the military? For the most part, food is going to be on you in the military and no it is not free. This is not a soup kitchen.

Even those who "eat free" have it come out of their pay as they will not get the BAS that they normally would. Other than places like basic/boot, you are not really restricted on what you eat, so long as you can pass the PT tests and make height/weight.

Every base in the military has a dining hall of some sort. Usually trainees have a meal card or use their social to "pay" for the food, while everyone else just pays like normal. It is really cheap compared to other places. I think dinner at most dining facilities is only like $4.25 or thereabouts. What is the policy on food in the military?
Food is not free. The only time it's free is if you're on a meal card. If you have dependents you will be paid extra money for them to buy groceries. There are no places on base that just hand out free food to family members. What is the policy on food in the military?YOU are provided with access to the chow hall, where you can eat what they serve for free. Your family gets nothing. You are provided with more money for having dependents and are expected to use that money to feed them. If you are hungry on the road, assuming you are working, you are allotted per diem pay to cover your meals. You can eat whatever you want, and if you become a lethargic fat body then you will be dealt with accordingly.
When I was in, if the mess hall had steak, I would pick whatever else was there. Stringy, tough, chewy and indigestible. I hope it's better by now. What is the policy on food in the military?like prison , 3 hots a day and someone has paid for it.What is the policy on food in the military?
The military does not pay for food for your family. The military does have dinning facilities on post and if your schedule meets their schedule you can eat there. If you are not receiving separate rations or rations not available (that is money for food that is in addition to your pay) you can eat at a dining facility. You go in and sign in and eat. If you are receiving extra money in your pay for food, you can eat there but it is not for free and it can be a little expensive. If you are an officer, you have to pay for your food as well.

The military only has to give you three meals a day. It does not have to provide you with snacks so your sgt would not buy you a snack on the road unless he wanted to be a nice guy. You have your choice of what is on the menu for the day, if you want something different you can go to the store and pay for it out of your pocket.
If you are not married:Al soldiers unwed and living in the barracks will eat at the DFAC (cafeteria hall). The food is great and it is like a hometown buffet.

They will deduct around 250$ out of your check to pay for it put that's all added in, so it's free in a way, but technically it came from your paycheck.

Your sgt can't tell you what to eat, and you are free to go buy food elsewhere with your own funds if you want.

    If married:

You will recieveBAH and BAS, food and housing, this means you get to keep the amount that is normally tkaen out of enlisted soldiers checks ($250) and use it for whatever you want. However, you will have to pay when going to the dfac.

Some dfacs dont check for your meal card so you can probably eat there for free anyways. What is the policy on food in the military?
You are lucky if your SGT wants to pay for anything, once a SGT actually pitched in and bought us Gatorade's while we sweated our @$$ off in the hot sun. Anyway if you don;t want to eat in the chowhall, and eat at the fast-food joints on post like micky D's, its on you. There is always a gut truck that AAFES provides for the ranges, again, its on you. You can Always pay for and pack healthy snacks or pogies bate in your LCE/LBE pockets while on maneuvers.
If it is like it was when I was in, you were provided with three free hot meals per day if you were single and lived in the barracks. A married soldier could eat in the chow hall at noon , but had to pay for it since he received separate rations pay for him and his dependents , unless he was out in the field playing war games, then his chow was free. You were allowed from 30 to 60 minutes for the noon meal at the company commanders discretion. Breakfast and supper was available generally for one hour before and after work for barracks dwellers. But in combat , eating was like sleeping, you did it when the opportunity presented itself. They did not pay for any food off base unless you were authorized to be off base , then you kept your receipts and turned them in for reimbursement. When on leave from and back to base food was on you.

What military branch would be the best to join?

Well right now I'm needing to do something with my life, I've dropped out of college and I'm wanting to join the military to get some self-discipline in my life. I was kind of leaning towards the navy, because I love to travel. I want something where I get to work out, but not hardcore, all the time. I dont want to spend a lot of time in school. I also dont want to do something where theres a high risk of combat. Im just wondering what which branch is right. What military branch would be the best to join?Well if you want to travel to different ports, but be at sea 98% of the time then go Navy. Air force you can do a good bit of traveling but they pick your job pretty much for you. As for the army you could travel and pick the job you want and that will be the job you get. If you don't want a combat job don't pick it. As for the marines I am not real sure how it works for them. Call a recruiter and just ask them. If you don't want them hasseling you leave them a fake name and #.What military branch would be the best to join?
I am in the Air Force, and it was the right choice for me. I have been able to travel a lot. I've been all over the states, Europe, been to Japan, Singapore, and (of course) the desert. But it's been a great experience. I love it. And if you're air crew, you really get to travel all the time, it is your job of course!

In the Air Force, you have mandatory PT three times a week, and of course, you can PT on lunch or when you have time. I'm not sure if that is as much as you want to do though. The Air Force is more concerned with being lean and fit, than having huge muscles.

Good luck with whatever your choice is.

Just a tip... I've never heard anyone regret joining the Air Force. What military branch would be the best to join? You're leaning toward the Navy because you like to travel? Yep you will do plenty of that. Just think about it, weeks at sea on a ship full of men with just a day or so in a foreign port. Yep, my idea of world travel. You don't want a high risk of combat, okay... Guess the Air Force is for you. The Army or the Marines would give you the self discipline you claim to want but, oh my goodness there's the risk of combat. Tell you what, just set your mind to accomplishing your education and teach yourself the self discipline you want. You're only going to get out of the Armed Forces what you choose to put in. If you're willing to go all the way and apply yourself you might just get what you want...otherwise, well maybe not. Good luck to you pardner.
KCH is right. I've never heard anyone regret having joined the Air Force as well.

Navy or Air Force seems to fit the bill better than the other two services for your particular critieria.

The majority of the Navy is assigned to ships. PT time is alloted and/or required. You'll be given free time as well, so if you want to work out during your free time, you could do that too. Navy will travel more than the other services because they are on ships.

Air Force you'll get to travel as well (or be stationed overseas). They have a lot of 'support' positions that are available.

Otherwise, be hardcore and join the Marines! What military branch would be the best to join?I think you might like the navy. travel, nothing too hardcore etc.

A lot of it, too, would depend on what job you'd like to do. The navy has great technical schools.

I was in the AF myself, only I was SF so I did travel a lot.

I think in life, when you lean toward something, it's your gut telling you.

Good luck. What military branch would be the best to join?
what air force has pt 3 times a week and a lunchbreak?? i know other people (nonners) do. if you work flightline, especially on fighters, there is no way to allow people to leave and workout, let alone get lunch break. yes i eat, but i eat when i can where i can. usually on the truck or on the spot with the acft. sidebar, but i couldnt resist. oh, air force rocks, go that route.
    I read your question.

If you want a Challenge and to the 1st to fight its the Marines.

If you want to travel and finish your college education its the Air Force.

If you just want to travel and not finish school its the Navy, good luck. What military branch would be the best to join?
If those are your criteria, then you will want to look at Navy and Air Force. Navy will fill the travel criteria more often than any other branch and neither of these will see combat like you migh in the army and marines.
If you don't want to go into combat then why join the military at all? No offense but that's kinda lazy. So if I had to pick I'd say coast guard
Army all they way. Preferably Airborne Infantry or Rangers.
Navy or Air Force..unless you want to be a bullet sponge for the war.
    coast guard
I am ex-Army special forces but my personal recommendation for you would be Air Force all the way.

The Navy "travels" more, but most of your time is spent at sea on the same boat... with the same ppl... eating the same food. It really won't matter to you where you are because you will just be inside the same ship. The "exotic" places you'll see will just be the different shorelines you pass by. I know this because I deployed several times on a Navy ship and talked to the sailors quite a bit (most recently in October of 2001 before operations in Afghanistan). Not many were happy to "travel" 6 mos of the year without a chance to really experience any place new (outside of a few days here or there).

The Army lets you choose your job, but not where you'll do it. You could pick a safe job, but get stuck in backwater Alabama (or someplace really dull). Its also stretched extremely thin right now (meaning the $ just isn't there to keep their facilities as nice as the other services). And Army bases tend to be located in the middle of nowhere so they can shoot their guns without waking (or blowing up) the neighbors.

The Marines train "everyone" to fight and so they tend to guard their support units less tightly (read: higher combat risk). They are definitely alot more concerned about the tedious aspects of being in the military (shined shoes, etc) and don't let you have much choice in job training. I spent several months with a Marine sniper unit - I was not impressed with the lifestyle or the mindset.

The Air Force is probably the best funded of the services (read nicer everything). It also tends to be the most relaxed in terms of discipline. The combat "risk" in the AF is tiny (more like non-existant) unless you specifically choose a job that requires risk (para rescue, combat controller, etc). Their bases also tend to be near large cities and have a relaxed policy on getting off base to enjoy your locality.

I believe the Air Force physical fitness test requires you to ride a bike or something relatively light like that. The Army %26amp; Marines have mandatory workouts 5 days a week where they run, climb ropes, do pullups %26amp; pushups, etc. Not sure about the Navy - they worked out but I don't know if it was mandatory or not.

Good luck, hope some of this at least helps a little...

What do you think the most powerful military in the world is?

like, If there was a WWIII, who do you think the most powerful military in that war is going to be?What do you think the most powerful military in the world is?The U.S.

The only other militaries that would have any chance in a full out war with the U.S. would be Russia and China, but all they have are numbers. The only thing I would worry about is a united Russia and China against the United States.

I mean hell, the U.S. spends more on their military than ALL of the other countries in the world combined; and that's not an exaggeration. What do you think the most powerful military in the world is?
    The United States of America.....

even if they both attacked us USA would win we have the best air force and the best navy it will be hard to get to America because r navy but they might go through Alaska but Canada is rite there i don't think they well just let them by but if u control the sky numbers don't mean anything napalm bombs cluster bombs and so on. if they bring there fighter jets in and they out numbers then with jets are 1 of r f 22 raptors could take on 4 at a time will blow them out of the sky before they know what happed so we r in good shape 4 now but if they use nukes then its a drawWhat do you think the most powerful military in the world is?the US.

It's not my opinion it's a fact. They spend more on their military than the next 40 countries spend combined. What do you think the most powerful military in the world is?
Doesn't matter, people have nukes. Any third world war will involve nuclear attacks. What do you think the most powerful military in the world is?China because they have more people. US has the smallest military in the world. What do you think the most powerful military in the world is?

  • What do you think is the best military action movie ever produced?

Lots and lots of superb military action movies have been produced so far.

For example, 'Saving Private Ryan (by S. Spielberg)', 'Cross of Iron (by S. Peckinpah)', 'Platoon (by O. Stone)', 'Black Hawk Down(by R. Scott)', 'Enemy at the Gates (by J.J. Annaud)' and so on.

It pays tribute to soldiers that have been long forgotten and fought in a war hardly anyone understands. Also it was a true story.

What do you think about Seventh Day Adventists joining the military?

What if that SDA really wants to join the military, but people of that faith say it is breaking the sabbath day? I do not beleive it's wrong to do the type of service that the military does on the Sabbath... What do you all think?

Bible texts to support your answer are encouraged. What do you think about Seventh Day Adventists joining the military?I served with three SDAs who were outstanding soldiers. They were medics, whose efforts helped save the lives of their fellow soldiers. And according to them, there was no stigma attached to serving as non-combatants in the Army. What do you think about Seventh Day Adventists joining the military?I knew a couple SDAs when I was in. Sorry, but when the army is up and running, you are right there. Don't care if you are a monk, if we need to go in on the weekends, or fight a war over Christmas, guess who is right there helping? You are! What do you think about Seventh Day Adventists joining the military?im a SDA as well but im not giving an excuse to break Gods law but there are some things that just wont send you to hell. Some sin does not deserve the loss of your eternal life. Especially depending on the circumstance your in. I highly doubt God would send you to hell for that.

Can military persons be served by State courts while on active duty?

It is my understanding that there is a federal statute that deals with service of process on military personnel. Does anyone know where I could find it? I am guessing that there are huge jurisdictional issues! Can military persons be served by State courts while on active duty?If you broke the law or are involved with something that required you to be served you will be served. It may get you in even more trouble with your chain of command depending on what it is but you are not protected from the law just because you are in the military. The thing you may be thinking of is the MILITARY, DOD, DON, DOA, DOAF, DOT cannot be sued by civilians. You also cannot be sued for doing your job, but other than that you are free game for any crime you commit or any other obligation you may be avoiding by being in the military, ie child support. Can military persons be served by State courts while on active duty?

yesCan military persons be served by State courts while on active duty?Yes you can. If you're talking about jury duty then you can just send in a copy of your orders. If you broke the law then you have to honor the summons unless you are deployed. You can find out more from JAG.

Why do the majority of the military spouses think they wear their husband's rank?

Throughout my career in the military, I have ran into many spouses who feel this way. I have spouses who tried to give me orders and tell me that they know more about the military than I do, even though I happen to outrank their husbands. I have seen military spouses demand salutes from servicemembers, attempt to give orders to the other spouses and servicemembers. Last I checked, spouses don't warrant a rank or subjected to the UCMJ.|||That's funny, my sister and I were having this conversation the other day. We decided that these people define themselves by what their husbands do for a living. It's common for military wives because it's so much harder for them to have their own careers. It's kind of sad, and really annoying.|||Wow that sounds so stupid.Really what are they thinking.Dam Im going to have to look for to this.Thats sucks.Im probably going to be looked down on because my husband just joined so he is a pretty low rank.Well I promise to all the military and spouses out there that I will never do that when and if my husband makes it to a very high rank.I think its stupid. Those ignorant women have not been in your shoes. If they have they probably would'nt be acting like that.I being a new Army wife expect Respect from everyone I meet but not salutes or anything like that just courtesy.|||i'm an army spouse and former soldier. i have met other spouses that act "better" than the rest of us, but i don't pay them much attention. i show the same respect to everyone that i would want shown to me. some army wives try to wear their husbands ranks, i don't really care. i do believe they should be respected like everyone else regardless if they're a private or LTC wife. some have put in in just as much time as the soldier has. they do deserve something for that. it's not easy.|||thats bizarre! and kindah funny........military wives/husband's even though they're not in, have to live the life of the spouse that does serve.......but to have them salute????? lolololo give me a break they don't know the meaning behind the gesture of a salute..........it's done to show there are no weapons in hand.........lololol wow|||You have got to be kidding me about the salutes. Please tell me you're kidding.

My hubby is in the military. Not me.

I don't play with the wives who believe they wear the rank....and lots do. The other wives I don't play with are the cheaters, the drinkers or the gossipers.

We have 4 boys, so I have enough to do without getting involved with drama.|||It is an un-written tradition. If you disrespect a Generals wife then she tells her husband the General and heads will roll. But that also occurs in the civilian world. The bosses wife in many ways has the same clout as her husband.|||Actually, being a MA, I have run into this also. Yes it's usually officer wives that do this. The thing about the cars, because of D.O.D. decals the guard is supposed to salut the approaching car if an officer decal is noticed. This is a courtesy, With the DOD decal system, the base locator sticker is Red for enlisted, Blue for officer, Green for civilian employee, white for contractor. So the salute rendered to the car showing respect for the possibility that an officer not in uniform might be in the car. But yes, I have worked in the pass and decal office, and there are wives that think because their husband is an officer they are afforded the same courtesies as officers. I had an officer call me and attempt to chew me out over the phone because I wouldn't give base decals to his wife. I merely let him talk to my superior, when the my superior got off the phone, I told him the facts of the matter, and he just said, too tough.|||Don't know, but when i was FAP'ed to the Military Police at the front gate of Camp Lejeune as a LCpl, it wasn't just the wives, but kids too. Tell some major's daughter she can't come aboard because her registration is expired and all you hear is "Do you know who my father is?"

    Nope, and don't care.

Man it was irritating!|||I don't know why spouses are like this, but I completly agree with your statement.|||I dont know, but i hate it you see them all the time driving around in their husbands car and waiting for you to salute them as they drive by, yes ill give them respect but not the full respect as i give there husband, there just a civillan.|||it's a fallacy to declare that the majority of military spouses wear their spouses' rank. when you thinkof the hundred's of thgousands of spouses out there, can you HONESTLY say that the few dozen or so that you have encountered that are like that represent the majority?!

the funny part, the ones I have encountered that exhibit this trait.. are senior enlisted spouses..E6-E8. NOT the Officer Spouses.|||I completely agree with you. Cant say it is a majority, but the one that do this make enough of a bad name to give all a bad name.

Seen many egregious examples in my career. Such as the commander wife that insisted that a female captain in the squadron do more to support the "Officers Wives Club".

Her response was point blank, "I'm not an Officers wife, I'm an Officer".

Best example was a SNCOs wife that tried to tell a SSgts wife that she should associate with the other wives, not the SNCOs wives. Not realizing that she was a GS-13 Civil Servant and outranked everyone in the squadron including the commander.|||well i have never done that lol..i am just a normal girl and i laugh if somone calls me maam lol..like when i went on base for a doctors appointment..i had to laugh|||they'e nothing more than glorified camp followers..ignore them|||This is a holdover from the old days when the US Army was a small organization.

This tends to happen among officers wives because they seem to think it is important.

If you were to go to a function that the officers wives had they would be seated by the order of their husbands rank.

I don't know that this still serves any purpose but they used to take care of each other ant the wives of the enlisted men when the troops were deployed.

The only source I have for this information was an aunt that dealt with this back in the 1950's.|||You need to get out more often then. They are the MINORITY in this.

And if you do run across them, it's pretty darn simple---you either ignore or let them know that they hold no rank and walk away.|||Spouses are expected to "conform" to the rank of the husband,That means they have to act the part , take the lead if need be. There is also the unwritten rule that they deserve the respect of the officer, not the rank. Most line officers wives, housewives, act and treat others with tact and consideration. There are always some with noses in the air or who think their poop don't smell.|||I could see a correlation between high ranking officers and wealthy businessmen and their wives who think they can do what they want because of their husband's position|||As a military brat growing up, I used to see the "Well gosh, I think I'll put my husband's rank on MY shoulders today!" all the time. Officer wives always tried to boss my mother around because my dad was a lower rank than their husband. Heck-as a military spouse now-I see it more than ever.

My experience as well as my mother's, has always, ALWAYS happened with the wives of officers. The spouces who demand salutes from service memebers...have gone too far. I think those who do this believe that since their husband or wife is higher ranking compared to the others surrounding them at times, they deserve the same respect as he/she does. With them it's pretty much: "You do this or I can and will report you!".

I'm sorry - but spouses are all the same. With gender and racial differences aside, the only rank we hold is either Mr. or Mrs.

We have no entitlement to our sponsor's military rank.|||You should have rendered the appropriate greeting...a one finger salute. I could only imagine how she ran back to her husband to complain, and to see the look of embarrasmaent on his face. Dependents do not rate a salute because of their husband's military status...however...the strange thing is that technically, when they drive through post, the little blue sticker does rate a salute from enlisted military members, and I want to emphasize the "blue sticker" not the dependent. Then again unless they are entering the gate, that's the only time they may expect see a salute from the enlisted gate guard. Nobody else walks around paying attention to people's stickers. It sounds to me that you would be doing her a service by educating her of what her place is, and what the salute represents, and how it is "earned" not given.|||A lot of military spouses don't wear the (military members)spouses rank. It is usually those spouses whose military member has gained status as a commander or senior enlisted member. Those spouses believe that now they have the right/duty/position to demand what is due them. The military members have forgotten that they are responsible for the family. If the military wanted you to have a husband/wife, they would have issued you one used to be an old saying.

I agree with the poster, some spouses have demanded salutes, but to that I say, when you go through the school, get the training, do some field work and gain MY respect...then MAYBE...MAYBE you might be worthy of a salute.|||I ignore these wenches. And if they push it, I file EO complaints against them. =)

You should see how mad they get when they begin investigations for this...LoL|||I agree with you except for one thing. I wouldn't say the majority. I would say some.

***EDIT: Thelightedtorch, you may find this interesting. Up until around 1980, ALL military wives were saluted at Camp Lejeune's gates. It didn't matter whether the sticker was red or blue. I don't know why it got started or if they did it anywhere other than Lejeune. The practice stopped because they were also saluting enlisted WM's not in uniform thinking they were wives.|||I've seen some military wives behave in that manner. It is unacceptible for any spouse--whatever her husband's rank--to give orders as though she were in command. (Or vice versa if the wife is the servicemember.)

Some people are just plain rude, and would treat others poorly whatever their spouse's position--it is not purely a military thing.

No, we don't wear the uniform, and we're not subject to the UCMJ, but military spouses are an integral part of the military support structure and are subjected to a great deal of stress and frustration--particularly during deployments and frequent PCSs.

So yes, there are some bad apples out there... There ALWAYS are bad apples, no matter where you go. But I find it hard to believe the majority of military wives you've met have treated you so poorly.|||I never experienced that while I was active duty. We did have the dependents whine about the time our favorite soap opera came on (dinner hour), but the commander said the TV programming was geared to the active duty, not the spouses. I guess I did meet one such woman who may have been like that but he divorced her so she was soon a non issue.|||thanks for the laugh!

what do you expect from people who refuse to think for themselves and prefer to receive "orders"

What can I expect when I enlist to become a military nurse?

If you are a military nurse or know a military nurse can you please share your/their stories and experieces from the beginning (enlisting) to actually beginning to care for patients?

I've known that I wanted to do nursing but I couldn't figure out how to do it and Im finally sold on joining the army. What can I expect when I enlist to become a military nurse? To get deployed when you don't want to, to sweep motor pools and cut grass for your company, to pack and unpack gear when your company will be getting deployed to wars and for training, to have no earrings on duty, to die in combat by an order of some dumb NCO who made it up the ranks by being in the service for a quarter century and NOT by using their brain, to be neglected and often times discriminated against, to have to get up at 6 AM and stand in the freezing weather, until the weasel in charge will command for you to run, to miss your home and wish you never joined this God forsaken organization and to work in the local military clinic, turning away 90% of the soldiers back to their duty with some Motrin, no matter what kind of illness they have, ranging from cold to broken bones or digestive disorders, to tell them that "it's nothing", while they are sick, and did I say to sweep motor pools ?What can I expect when I enlist to become a military nurse? If you want to be a military nurse,

Then you will need a 4 year Nursing degree first.

There is no way to enlist and become a nurse.

  • If the government cannot manage health care, should we trust a government run military to defend the country?

Conservatives say the government is inept and the private sector is brilliant, so do you want an inept government military defending our country? Wouldn鈥檛 privatizing the military be better?

If on the other hand, we have the best military in the world, couldn鈥檛 that same government run the best medical system in the world? If the government cannot manage health care, should we trust a government run military to defend the country?Fact, 200+ years of being safe

    Fact, SSI almost bankrupt

Fact, Medicare/caid both are almost broke.

Maybe it's easier to kill than heal?

You can be good at one thing and suck at others, look at Tiger!

We can have a great military and still not be able to run healthcare, I don't think they are mutually exclusive. Apples and oranges actually. If the government cannot manage health care, should we trust a government run military to defend the country?I trust the military far more than I do the current government. But if you want to see a prime example of what government run health care would be like in this Country, check out the VA.

The biggest problem with your premise is that the current government has a "vision" of what it thinks health care should be like. That would not improve service. If the government cannot manage health care, should we trust a government run military to defend the country? The government pays the military, but even then the military does best when run by the military, not the bureaucrats. If the government cannot manage health care, should we trust a government run military to defend the country?

What percentage of college students choose careers in the military?

I'm doing research for an article about college students choosing military careers, and would like to know any relevant information about said topics, and please include sources. What percentage of college students choose careers in the military?Sorry, I do not know percentage of college students. I do know that out of my son's Officer Training Class, they had 100% college graduates. 62% had graduated in the last 2 years.

Liberal papers claim 0%, but that does not explain all the new Officers as they must be college graduates to be Commissioned Officers.. The days of people joining because they have no other choice has ended, causes a slight fall in military.

How could I find the names of the fired military contractors in Iraq?

I'm writing an article on Military Contractors. I want to interview those who took part in the various massacres in Iraq to get their point of view. Is there a way to get the names of these contractors? (It was the Blackwater incident where 17 Iraqis were killed). How could I find the names of the fired military contractors in Iraq? With your predisposed opinion you will get nowhere. Until you realize that they acted in self defense instead of carrying out a "Massacre" your article will be a pointless rag fit only for the New York Times. You will not ever get Blackwater to divulge the names of their employees anyways. Your best bet is to let a sleeping dog lie.

Did Blackwater simultaneously declare themselves military and civilian to go around all laws?

Blackwater said they were exempt from civilian laws because they were part of the greater U.S. military, but said their agents could not be held accountable by military tribunals because they are civilian contractors.

"Blackwater" Jeremy Scahill, 2007.Did Blackwater simultaneously declare themselves military and civilian to go around all laws? The agreement the US had with the Iraqi Government was, Any contract security company working for the US Military or state Dept were immune from prosecution by the Iraqi Govt. They were not outside the law however as they are liable to, and have been, prosecuted by the US government for any wrong doing.

Incidentally, Blackwater were notorious among security companies in Iraq for their gung ho attitude and getting involved in firefights alongside the military. Something which was forbidden by the security company mandate issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior under their security company licencing regulations.

I have a 16 yr old son who does poorly in school, but did like JROTC. Would you consider sending your son or daughter to military school?Have you ever considered sending your child to a military school?WHENEVER you need to check on your child, you should have accessibility to that school. If NOT, you shouldn't accept any excuses. Without your supervisory 'rights' as a parent, the school personnel may not stagnate the development of your child. Many horror stories have come forward about private schools, SO ESPECIALLY, you need to have an open door at all times. This way, you can see and indicate what you do approve of or not. You also need to investigate the past history of the institution in which you are interested. YOU need to know that the school enjoys a high reputation. This way you know how you want to spend your money.

Put God's veil of protection about you.

I would suggest these scriptures as follows:

What shall we then say to these things? If GOD be for us, WHO can be against us? - Romans 8:31 The Lord daily loadeth us with BENEFITS, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. - Mark 11:24 Also, I would suggest that you read Psalm 35. It is long-winded and very intense. If you are sincere and I believe that you are, then read this and let it 'uplift' you. How should I talk to my parents about me wanting to join a military academy and not a regular college?

Im currently in my Junior year of high school (which my parents pay for), and now ive firmly made my decision that i want to attend a military academy and join the service. I fear that they will not be approving of this, and will be dissappointed in me. I really respect my parents and want them to be proud of me, and this is what i want them to be proud of me for. Anyone who has advice on how to talk to them about it or who has gone through a similar situation will be greatly appreciated for the help. How should I talk to my parents about me wanting to join a military academy and not a regular college?I cannot see many parents not being proud of a son who earns an appointment to one of the service academies, so I honestly do not think that is going to be an issue. "Mom, Dad, I am considering competing for an appointment to the Naval Academy, West Point, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy or United States Merchant Marine Academy to serve our country as a commissioned officer. I would like to submit applications for West Point SLS, the Air Force Academy Summer Seminar and in February for the Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Coast Guard Academy AIM and hope to be admitted to at least one. There is a cost involved for transportation to the summer seminar and hope you will support me in seeking an appointment."

How likely is it for the military to check your medical history?

I want to join the Navy and don't want to lie about my past, depression, but if this was 10 years ago and I have been fine for 9.5 and I lie to get in. Will I be caught in the long run. Again I don't want to lie but has anyone done this and been able to successfully go through the military/navy??How likely is it for the military to check your medical history?Honesty is the best policy. The rules are in place for a reason. For folks like you that have had rough times and turned to suicidal ideations and threats, it is to protect them from themselves in the case that the military life becomes too much for them to handle. How likely is it for the military to check your medical history?
Well first off you should not be joining the military because it is evident that you have a serious issue with the traits of a military leader.

    JJDIDTIEBUCKLE

JUSTICE JUDGMENT DEPENDABILITY Initiative Decisiveness Tact INTEGRITY Enthusiasm BEARING Unselfishness COURAGE Knowledge LOYALTY Endurance

By lying to get in to a career field where integrity is not just a trait but a way of life you reveal yourself to be the anti-thesis of a sailor. I would lecture you on this however if you review JJ it should become evident that the military lifestyle is not the one for you.

Secondly, YES THE MILITARY WILL CHECK YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS!!!! The doctors at MEPS for enlisted personnel and DODMERB for officers are there to weed out those who do not qualify due to various reasons. The aforementioned doctors are there to weed said people out so that other personnel will not be at risk due to the candidates inability to hack it mentally or physically

The military is NOT an equal opportunity employer nor can it afford to be.How likely is it for the military to check your medical history? They are easily passing waivers for depression, especially if it was a decade ago and you've proven you can function normally without medication for the time you've been off of it (has to be at least a year).

Be honest, because when/if you have a breakdown and they look through your medical history and discover your prior depression, you will be charged with fraudulent enlistment and discharged, usually dishonorably.
    they do a check

but its not a very thorough check it only checks what

is on file and easily to see..records that are expunged

or sealed are not looked at. lots of people have lied to join the military

and even those with depression have gotten in.

if the military finds out i believe its one of the things that will ban

you from all branches as its one thing that i think there are no waivers for.

so if its past seven years its a good chance its sealed or so.

the only way they will find out is if you try to get a job with a top secret clearance. or a high security clearance job. then they will find out.

dont feel to bad about trying to lie to your recruiter no one wants you to join the military more then your recruiter.

he should find a way to work around it or so.How likely is it for the military to check your medical history?I went through the recruiting process 11 years ago, as long as I remember when you go to MEPS they only ask if you had depression or suicidial thoughts in the last year, and as far as medical records go, unless you were "committed" when you over the age 16 you should be alright. But this was a long time ago, so ask your recruiter a lot has changed, they want you to enilist so they will give you a straight answer, it reflects poorly on them if they enlist someone who gets thrown out.How likely is it for the military to check your medical history?
I don't know were all these people are getting there answers but due to the whole privacy act the military (means every branch) can not check your medical history unless you release your files to them so if you say nothing is wrong they can't prove it and believe me they will harass you and scare you into believing that If you lie you will get caught but as long as you keep your mouth shut you should be fine and they run a backround check to see if your a criminal and the fbi backround check is for federal warrants and identity
My brother recently got checked for the navy and they double checked everything they could there hands on. If i were you i would tell them and hope for the best. at the beginning they will give you a long list of things that will keep you from joining, read it and watch out for you past problem. How likely is it for the military to check your medical history?
I am in the U.S. Navy. From what I know and my past recruiters told me they run a full backround check.. FBI does too for police records and things. If it's in your medical documentation they will find out. Just explaint the situation to your local recruiter.
Yea, they do check it. They check out everything basically. My dad is in the Navy and I know a lot! I myself am joining. I have depression and I don't think that it will hurt me at all on getting in.
A friend of mine had a heart surgery the day he was born due to a weak heart and he wasn't allowed in the army. One of the things they do is check medical history as well as many other things.
Since it was so far in the past, you should tell them. It is very likely they wont hold it against you, but if you lie and they find out you will be discharged.
yes they WILL check and they WILL find out. The only reason they dont want anyone that has been diagnosed as depressed no matter how many years it has been is because of incase anything happens in the field that could have been prevented.
If you aren't going to require secret clearance or above just don't tell them. Otherwise forget it.
The Navy doesn't want depressed loners in its ranks. Try Burger King instead.
They check it with a fine tooth comb. Better to talk with your recruiter.

Anyone in the military know? What can affect whether or not you get your enlistment bonus in the military?Who knows. At least in the National Guard. A new recruit got arrested for shop lifting a couple of months before going to boot camp and they got their bonus a month after completing boot camp. Nothing should stop it unless you really screw up bad, they probably have conditions for payout if you are flagged for some reason, but I don't even know that for sure, but I wouldn't think it would be something to worry about. What can affect whether or not you get your enlistment bonus in the military? Not becoming qualified in your job will delay your bonus, receiving 8 awols will revoke your bonus (remeber one day has two report times, so one day is 2 awols), making changes to your contract after BCT and become MOS Q'd... look at your 4/1, 4/2, and your annex A (bonus amendum, these are the docs you received a copy of the days you enlisted at your local MEPS... also check for scanned copies on your IPERMS account) it will clearly state any violations contact your incentives manager if you are not receiving your bonus, and rember it can take up to 2 months after your report home/arrive to your duty station to receive your bonus

How long can women in the military grow their hair?

I know there are some types of regulations for women hair in the military, but is there any regulation about length? or just hairstyle? How long can women in the military grow their hair?I don't believe there is any regulation on length. The hair must be pulled up in a neat fashion when in uniform, or can hang down if it is less than shoulder-length. You can't wear anything "eccentric" or dye your hair different colors.

When out of uniform, you can wear it as you please. Once again I don't think they care about the length, because you have to pull it up in uniform anyway... Ask your local recruiter to get a solid answer. How long can women in the military grow their hair?
    I can speak for Army.

Hair length must not go below the bottom of the collar (and many NCO's will cringe if it even touches the top of it, but by regulation, it can't go past the bottom).

If longer than collar length, hair must be put up - not hanging loose like in a ponytail, but in a bun. Bun width cannot exceed 4 inches in diameter and cannot interfere with wearing of headgear (beret, patrol cap, gas mask, etc.).

Bangs can't go past eyebrows. Hair color must be natural (not as in you can't dye it, but you have to dye it a natural color - not purple). Hair styles cannot be faddish, and if you choose to keep it short, it must still be feminine in appearance (as in, no G.I. Jane).

You can google search Army Regulation 670-1 for more details about Army hairstyles, but as another Answerer already said.... each branch of military service has a different rule about hairstyles.

EDIT: Who TDs an accurate response? Lame. How long can women in the military grow their hair?It varies by branch of service. In the Army you may have it as long as you wish but it must be put up in such a manner as not to interfere with the wear of your hat and still present a proper military appearance. Your bangs also may not touch your eyebrows. If you are talking about unadjusted length then the hair may not touch the bottom of your shirt collar in back.
i have long hair. almost to my waist, but i cut it off to shoulder length to go to BCT for the army. i found the longer it was, the easier it was to keep up and with in regulations. which according to the army and AR 670-1 says a females hair must be kept up above the collar and in a neat appearance. and the bangs must not fall below the eye brows.

i personally would put it in a pony tail with some gel and then wrap the pony tail into a bun. took about a total of 90 seconds. a spray of hair spray and it stayed all day long. and when i left service it was back down to my waist. How long can women in the military grow their hair? You can keep it as long as you wish. It must be maintained in a neat and orderly fashion when in uniform. This means pinned up. The exception to all of this is the Navy. In Navy boot camp, woman's hair is cut to a bob length above the shoulders. This is only for the duration of Boot Camp and then you can grow it out again once you are out in the fleet. How long can women in the military grow their hair?
Air Force you can have it as long as you like providing when its up it doesn't go past your collar, same as the Army.

While I was on active duty, my hair was halfway down my back. I could French Braid my hair in about a minute. Much easier than having short hair and having to style it, etc.
Shoulder length would be a safe bet, as long as you can put it up out of the way when you're in uniform. But I've seen longer. How long can women in the military grow their hair?
As long as you want as long as you keep it neat and off your collar (You can put it in a bun).
it may not touch the collar so it must be put up if long. but it is rarely enforced
didn't know there are rules for that

Although, some branches of the services do encourage future officers to obtain degrees relating to the field they want to pursue, such as an engineering or aerospace-related degree for flight personnel. An infantry officer, on the other hand, can get away with earning any degree he wants because his speciality is not related to any Technical Science or Humanity or Philosophy.

Should you want to join the Marines or the Army, you would first get a degree from college or university, then head to an Officer Selection Officer and sign up through him. He will assess you and then, should you pass your PFT (Physical Fitness Test), you will become an Officer Candidate. You then head to Officer Candidate School and once you graduate, you will head for further training, after which you get to select your future job (MOS).

Another route to becoming an officer would be to join ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) in university and become an officer through them. What should I study if I want to pursue a career in the Military as a combat officer? To become a combat officer in armed forces, study of any discipline above graduate level is a prerequiste besides PHYSICAL STAMINA AND ENDURANCE, and psychological aspects are considered as important. What is the military rank of the Fort Hood killer?

I haven't heard it mentioned, maybe once.

At what point is it customary to cease addressing military personnell by their rank?

I thought this stopped only when discharged from service, and since this is still ongoing, no discharge yet..?

Is this being avoided mention, while alternatively his religious affiliation has had ample mention, to sway blame away from the military, and to place the blame moreso on his religion?

God is with the victims and their loved ones - may God help the suspect and offer forgiveness.

Thanks to God for having none of my friends or family involved. What is the military rank of the Fort Hood killer? He is a major in the U.S. Army.

How should I behave at a military funeral as a bugler?

I will be playing taps; with a real trumpet not the electronic thing. I know how to play it, but I am unsure of how to act and what is the proper procedure. The guides I found online seem to assume that I am military personnel but I am a civilian volunteer. How should I behave at a military funeral as a bugler? After being a bugler for well over 1000 memorials, ceremonies and funerals, I can offer, just be professional.

Keep your mouthpiece in your right hand to keep it warm/cool. There's nothing worse than putting the horn up to play and the darned thing is ice cold or scalding hot.

There will/SHOULD be a flag draped over the casket. If this is a civil (civilian-type) ceremony, the religious-authority (preacher/reverend/priest/rabbi/etc) will announce, "We will now pay military honors to the deceased" or something similar. That is when the flag-folding team will move in and ever so slowly take the flag, step back and hold the flag horizontally over the casket. This will be the cue for the next step - which will depend upon if there is a rifle team there or not.

If there is a rifle team, they will begin their three volleys. Hook up with the Sergeant in Charge of the team for his last instructions, just to coordinate. As the Sgt gives the command for READY - bring your trumpet up to your mouth so you can warm it up and get the chops moist - and just blow air lightly into the horn to warm it up... no tooting!! Wait for the THIRD volley - and as the Sergeant orders his team to PRESENT ARMS, which should be within about a second of the third volley - as the word "arms" is fading out, your first note should sail out over the assembly. If you were to SAY it, it would be almost as if you said "PRESENT ARMS TOOT TA TOOOOOOT".

If there ISN'T a rifle squad, hook up with the person in charge of the flag team to coordinate... and then follow along as follows:

As the team steps up to grab the flag, put your horn up to warm it up (no warm-up tones!!!). They'll grab the flag, slowly stand up and then step back to pull the flag flat. It is then that the person in charge will salute - and as the hand touches their hat/forehead, start taps.

All in all, it is 34 seconds of "You'd better not screw this up!!"

To make sure you don't screw it up - all morning, when you are warming up - ONLY start out on the first note of Taps. ONLY play Taps as you are warming up (you don't have to go all the way up to the top note if your lip can't take it), and ALWAYS make sure you let that last note just fade out. This will keep that starting note in your head as you think about starting and help you from starting out on some strange harmonic.

DO NOT LOOK AT ANY OF THE PEOPLE IN THE FUNERAL PARTY!!!!! If you do, you may start crying - and that ALWAYS screws up Taps. Until you start, ONLY look at the person from whom you will take your cue to start playing. When you are playing, find a leaf, a window, an outlet, ANYTHING to stare at as if you are staring off 1000 yards away - not at someone. Yeah, I know it's hard, but you gotta do it!

And once you are done, bring your horn down to directly in front of you (bell down), then sag your arms so the horn is in front of your zipper - and bow your head. From here on out - go ahead and cry all you want... Hold the position of respect for at least 10 seconds before you bring the horn up and put it under your left arm. The mouthpiece can either stay in place or take it out - your call.

When you leave, wait for the rifle team or the flag team to depart - and just fall in behind them as if you were part of them. There is no need to march in step (though it does look good).

There's not much else to say - other than, no matter what you plan on, something will change. The team will exit a different direction than planned or something. The key is to make the FAMILY think that you guys practiced to do what they saw for years, so it will be perfect for THEM. Just look professional.

How should I behave at a military funeral as a bugler?Basically, stand straight with your heels together, one arm down by your side making a loose fist while the other holds the bugle. Make sure you position yourself away from the services. Far enough away that you can still be heard but it's not loud to the people at the service. You should be standing by yourself pointing toward the service. Remember to play it slow and as smooth as you can. It's a sad song for a sad time. How should I behave at a military funeral as a bugler?
I love your question. I first would like to thank you for volunteering, that is very patriotic. I have played the bugle in over 50 funerals in my 21 yrs in the NAVY. They will have a place for you to stand sort of in the background. You will stand with the bugle at your side. Trying to stand as still as possible(without locking your knees) They will let you know ahead of time when to start playing it. You will raise it in a slow sort of manner. Once finished playing taps, you will lower the bugle to your side in the same manner. You will just stand there until the funeral is over. Then be prepared to have the family and friends come and thank you. The work uniform for the Army looks like a discolored tent and has a LOT of Velcro, also they wear either a cap or a beret.

Marines have either a dark green digital camouflage or a brownish-tan camo work uniform on. On their heads they wear a "Cover", the most impressive one any branch has, it is flat on the top and has points that almost give it the appearance of having an anchor in it.

The navy I've heard has blue camo, and I don't know about the airforce, never really checked into them... but just look up the branches...

What are the thing our military need to help the people of Iraq?

Ending our commetment in Iraq is important not only to the Iraqies, but also the United States.

What are the thinjgs our military need to do to help the iraqies? What are the thing our military need to help the people of Iraq?Actually, I think we should call the UN in and tell them to put some of the oil on the market for sale..

Then open shares for the IRAQI people..

Turn in an insugent, get one share.. Then when they give a location of one or more, we take their DNA and fingerprints..

This enpowers them to make money for their own families and keeps the profits in their own country..

Then when we clean out the ones who are attacking us, they get their shares.. When they want to cash in, they simply supply their DNA and finger prints and the cash is given to them.. They know who belongs there and who doesn't.. And no one would die giving them the leads.. They are going house to house as it is..

Can you imagine the power you take out of the insurgents hands?.. Heck, even those iraqi kids know where all the weapons are.. I mean their allah promises to support their families if they are a suicide bomber, how much better is it to stay alive and support them yourself??..

  • What does it mean for the United States to take on direct military involvement in outside acts of genocide?

For a paper one of the possible topics is if the United States should or shouldn't take on directly military involvement in outside acts of genocide. What exactly does this mean? What does it mean for the United States to take on direct military involvement in outside acts of genocide?Do you mean if we assist in outside acts of genocide, like selling Saddam Hussein chemical weapons which he then used to gas the Kurds? The short answer, if you're thinking of that, is that it means we're not living up to our ideals. We do a lot of that.

Or do you mean stepping in to prevent (or reduce) outside acts of genocide, such as in Darfur? That's more complicated. Sometimes the president who ordered it is criticized for it (such as Clinton's bombings in Serbia). Other times we stick around too long as peacemakers and even those we're trying to protect get upset with us (since no one likes an occupier, even a well-meaning one). Other times we come in, take care of business, and make that part of the world a better place. An awful lot depends on what's happening in the area being discussed. What does it mean for the United States to take on direct military involvement in outside acts of genocide?Does your question mean

    - That the US should if one foreign group is trying to kill all members of another group.

    or

    - The the US should kill all members of some group considered to be an enemy.

The question can be interpreted both ways. The answer obviously depends on the interpretation.

What factors led to the military success of Ancient Sparta?

I am wondering what the main reasons are that the spartans were so successful on a military level. Any society based examples would help too, but any factor would be appreciated. What factors led to the military success of Ancient Sparta?Unlike the other city states, Sparta's was a pure military state, each man trained from the age of 7yrs to become a professional killer. Sparta's success lay in this extensive training, in particular in the formation of the phalanx, as each man's shield protected the left hand side of his neighbor. As this formation contained men who had spent their lives training, messing, sleeping and being educated together this established a very tight bond, not often broken. Also the state promoted mentoring, each boy during training and education was sponsored by an elder who guided him, ( in sex as well). Thus the phalanx consisted of a body of men who not only knew the person to his left but everyone forming it and trusted that no man would let his brother down. What factors led to the military success of Ancient Sparta?I would think it was their training. Also, their soldiers were encouraged to sleep with each-other, this is confusing at first, but when you are fighting to keep yourself alive you fight hard, when you are fighting so that you AND your lover survive, you fight hardest (no pun intended)What factors led to the military success of Ancient Sparta? They were the best at the phalanx, which was the prominent military strategy at the time in that area. Their prowess was fairly short lived, because tools of warfare like the bow and arrow came into large use, and due to the new mobility the phalanx was fairly useless.

When we spend more than the world combined, that is too much. How many democrats agree that we should always have a well funded Military?
Military as defense? Or, military as offense? Big difference.

If your question was, "SHould we have a well funded defense, like Switzerland or Sweden?" Then the answer is absolutely. But let's be accurate here, should we have a well funded imperialistic military to secure the profits of Exxon, Shell, Halliburton, Ratheon, Boeing etc? No!How many democrats agree that we should always have a well funded Military?I like the idea of adequate over well. We don't need a military complex like Regan built. Its just money down the tubes. Now the Ruskies and the US have tons and tons of nuclear waste for nothing. Thanks for the debt Ronnie. To provide for the national defense doesn't require the trillions of dollars that get spent on useless foreign conquest. We don't even keep what we're invading.
I consider myself a Moderate Democrat and I think that a well funded military is essential. I wish we increased our budget to the military to 1 trillion dollars. Its important to have the strongest military so that we can never be challenged. How many democrats agree that we should always have a well funded Military? The question is do we always have to have a well funded Defense Industry ready to provide the military with things it does not need. How many democrats agree that we should always have a well funded Military?
Look at the precedent set at Pearl Harbor. That is the state desired by Democrats.
Can a military be well funded without being funded more then the rest of the world combined? That is the only question. How many democrats agree that we should always have a well funded Military?
    Of course I agree.

We just happen to disagree with the quantitative definition of "Well-funded"
Must be? Why must it be? Can't we do this within reason. We spend too much. We don't need to spend 20x what other countries do.
We would have a well-funded military at 10% of the current military budget. I'm for that.
I think Obama found that having a half billion dollars in cruise missiles in the warehouse comes in handy.
Then don't complain about taxes when it is well funded.
"well funded" leaves too much room for discussion...hence the problem

How would you feel about mandatory Military or Civil service in the United States?

When a child becomes an adult they have to choose between serving a few years in the civil service or two years in military service. (the time required to serve is negotiable, but civil service must be a good bit longer than military to give incentives for young people to choose military.)

I think a problem with society today is many Americans are too cocky and too proud. I think it would be a great idea to force everyone to serve in order to humble them. I think it鈥檚 also a good idea to make those benefiting from many freedoms and opportunities to give back to the country that is giving it to them. I think there are beneficial points that would appeal to both sides of the political isle, Dems - yeah socialism! / Reps - pro military!.
