There are also many jobs offered on post, and a lot of them will allow you to transfer from station to station. For example, being a cashier at the Commissary or Exchange. What are good careers for military spouses?Yes, there are jobs on post. If you are hired on post as a government worker, you will be able to transfer your retirement when you transfer bases. If however, you are hired as a contractor, that will not work. One thing that you might want to look into is a medical informatics program. I believe that is an Information Systems type degree. The reason why I would recommend this is because most posts have hospitals/medical centers. You also might want to check into an accounting type of training. I really think that your degree in computer science will be good. The only thing that you need to make sure of is that your civilian record is clean. Meaning that you can get security clearances. Good luck.
By the way, did you hear that the army or air force is starting a cyber security command. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp鈥?/a>
After you finish school, you might want to look into this. What are good careers for military spouses?Forget about longevity and pensions. Most companies, especially IT, don't work that way any more. Look at Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and a host of other DoD contractor jobs. I spent 7 years active duy and now I'm a contractor doing software engineering. I switch companies when I need to in order to keep working and move my career along. "Civilian" or GS jobs won't transfer with your wife. You're best off being a contractor or just getting a job in the commercial market wherever you end up. Open up a Roth IRA and take control of your own retirement. Good luck! What are good careers for military spouses?
You need to check with the HR supervisor on base and find out if there are any civilian job openings. Elsewise, your wife will outrank you if you decide to join on your own.
