How do I get my son to join the military?

My son is 27 years old and going nowhere. He is a recovering addict but has never committed a crime. I think the military might give him the structure and discipline he sorely needs. He is afraid to go into combat but he has a lot of computer skills and has a 120 IQ. Will they take him? If so, how can I convince him? Bring back "press gangs" of the 18th century! How do I get my son to join the military?I served twenty years in the Navy, and I'll be honest with you. I had druggies working for me, and they were usually a pain in the behind. I don't know if the Navy would take him, but I sure wouldn't want him working for me.

The real question which you're asking is, "What should I do with my son?" I recommend that you contact a local chapter of al anon, and ask them for help. They may not be a good fit for you, but they can help you contact somebody who can help you.How do I get my son to join the military?
Being a recovering addict, I'm not sure they'll take him.How do I get my son to join the military? They will not take a recovering addict at this time. There are many good reasons for that. First the military is not a social program. The goal of the military is to win wars, not to change people. Your son still needs counseling if he is recovering and I suggest that you make sure that this happens and look into programs that your state offers in regards to education and employment.
the military doesnt want your son hes a loser and an addict

the military is not a social welfare program get im in rehab or throw him out hes an adult you cant make him do anything

and the military isnt going to fix him its not rehabHow do I get my son to join the military?i understand your thinking here, and you really might be right... but this is DEFINITELY a decision that you need to let your son make for himself. you really don't want to push him into the military. i mean, what if you force and nag and pressure him into it, and he gets killed? wouldn't you feel absolutely awful for the rest of your entire life? or what if he becomes disabled and you end up caring for your incredibly resentful, paralyzed 30 year old son? imagine helping him go to the bathroom while he is HATING you...

it really might help him out if he joins up, but let him make his own choice, or you really might be sorry. How do I get my son to join the military?
Druggie is not wanted. Maybe you should have done a better job raising him.
Some of these answers are not being polite, but they are correct. Many people do not apply themselves in life and they sometimes make decisions that can follow them the rest of their lives. They sometimes think "No matter how bad I screw up, there's always the Army".

Unfortunately for them, the Army does not want criminals, Drug addicts, and education drop outs. War is a serious business and you can't fight one with a bunch of societies has been's. I'm sorry, but I would not want your son in our military mostly because someone may have to depend on him to save their life. How do I get my son to join the military?
He probably could join if they didn't know he was a recovering addict BUT he shouldn't until he is under control because it could make him want to go back or not stop. Do not make him do it or convince him he has to want to be there. IF he don't he will just be a screw up and not be wanted which can drive him back to drugs. He needs to get a job and be able to stand day to day life without drugs.Which means have a job and taking care of hisself too.

I know I wouldn't want him to be my battle buddy!

His IQ don't matter only what he scores on the their tests.
no you cannot force him to enlist and the past Drug use DQs him anyway.
