Will a processor removed from a Dell computer work in another computer?

I have a Dell Dimenstion E520. I would like to know if the processor, removed from the motherboard, will work in another computer (Dell or otherwise) - does Dell lock it somehow? The CPU will work in any Dell or other main board that supports it. Just check to see if the board your installing it into can handle it.
