Thanks for your help. How can I connect my Dell desktop to a coax plug?Ask the apartment manager about the free Internet- it's probably wireless.
The coax socket probably isn't for Internet access, it might be leftover from the previous occupant's satellite or cable TV service. While cable Internet service is delivered via coax, the apartment complex already has a cable modem connected somewhere.
Tenants will either have an ethernet jack somewhere in a room (matching the connector on the back of your computer) or connect wirelessly, in which case you need a wireless network adapter.
It's possible that you need to purchase a cable modem but that would be highly unusual. Cable companies typically bill each cable modem connected to their network separately. If the complex is sharing free access, they already have a modem and router in place somewhere, and that's what you'll connect to- that's how hotels do it.
Maybe the apartment has a deal with the cable company where each unit still must connect their own cable modem to the coax but the billing is waived? It's possible, but I've never seen a setup like that. How can I connect my Dell desktop to a coax plug? You need to but a cable modem. something like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Motorola+-+S鈥?/a>
The back of the model will have an ethernet port that will allow you to connect to your computer (your square connection).
