Dell screen wont show anything till you start clicking everywhere?

Its about a 2 year old Dell desktop and for whatever reason the screen will freeze up and sometimes it will go white until you start clicking around on items and the itll start showing them... The menu bar does it after start up almost everytime. Click on it and itll come back... when clicking on everything to get it to show eventually the computer will just freeze all together and have to restart. Havent got a clue where to even start... Chances are there are 12 or more programs or utilities that start up every time you boot. By the time you get Windows and all the other stuff loaded, there's not enough RAM left to allocate to the video adapter (not very many 2-year-old laptops have dedicated video memory). Disable everything that loads on startup except what's necessary.
